"What
is the Lubbock SketchClub?"
A
message from the Founder.
To know what the Lubbock SketchClub is you need to
know a little bit about why it was created. Ten
years ago, when I was twenty years old, I decided that I wanted
to make comic books for a living. I was ambitious, naïve and
bull-doggish. I had no idea at that time how much work I had
ahead of me. Not a clue. My greatest frustration, making comics
in West Texas, was not having anyone to learn from. Though
there may have been very talented artists available, I never
found them and had no way of connecting with them. So, much
of my learning over the last decade has been self-taught,
and hard-fought. This education however lends me an understanding
of the process, and of teaching the process, that is very
unique. It also has given me an appreciation for the need
to pass these skills on.
"What was once your pain will become your hope."
What was once something that I believed to be a great
deficit in Lubbock Texas; lack of resources, connections and
outlets for artistic creativity, I now see to be opportunities.
I realized that if there were a way to provide those opportunities,
people would respond quickly and passionately to become part
of this thing that we all have needed. I never could have
imagined though how true that was.
"Comic book Culture"
The majority
of the Lubbock
SketchClub members, myself included, have a love for
cartooning and comic books, and a drive to create comic books
professionally. We are however, not exclusively a comic
book art group. In fact. due to the complex nature of the
comic book medium, our focus encompasses many different
artistic disciplines that happen to be part of the process
of making comic books.
There
are the basics of drawing and writing. But also more demanding
aspects like painting, figure drawing, portraiture, caricature,
cartooning, cinematic storytelling. perspective, graphic design,
publishing, marketing, and the business of being an artist.
All of these aspects are part of a broad program designed to
make successful comic book artist. But it also benefits artists
with a more specialized focus on a single discipline. This is
why you will see fine artists, painters and sculptors, working
along side cartoonists and comic book artists. We all benefit
from the same set of experiences.
"Our Mission" There
is no less talent in West Texas than any other region.
All that was missing were the resources. It is our intention,
in conjunction with other local arts organizations,
to level that playing field. To provide resources and
outlets for local artists to get the skills they need
to become successful artists and then the opportunities
to do something with that.
But
our success comes not only from focusing on the artist, but
on the person. It is Our Mission"to
enable artists to reach their fullest potential artistically
and spiritually, to use their lives and talents to make the
world a better place, and inspire others to do the same."
"Our
Strategy"
The Lubbock SketchClub is working to provide everything
an artists needs to become successful. Our SKETCHNIGHTS
that focus on the spirit of the artist - Getting in
touch with drawing because its FUN and drawing together
because we can. WORKSHOPS and CLASSES to help artists take
on new skills, and the FIGURE
DRAWING group to learn to refine and apply those skills.
We
also print a quarterly SketchClub SKETCHBOOK
that enables our artists to get their first experiences
in publishing, as well as to create benchmarks so
that artists can see how they've grown over time.
Additionally,
thanks to the support of the Hope Shalom Community,
and Asbury Methodist church, we also have an
ART GALLERY for our artists to exhibit their works.
But our most exciting endeavors are still to come. In January
2008 we will be starting our COMICS
GROUP, to support artists in becoming comic book creators.
This is in tandem with our new quarterly COMICS ANTHOLOGY,
and the Lubbock COMIC BOOK EXPO (May 3rd) co-sponsored by
the Science
Spectrum of Lubbock.
"Community
Outreach"
The second
part of our strategy is to reach artists of all ages and talent
in the community and enable them to thrive through the SketchClub
mission. Community outreach involves AFTER SCHOOL programs,
workshops, as well as regular participation in public EVENTS
where the SketchClub provides interactive demonstrations
that encourage kids and adults to sit and draw with us.
"the Lubbock SketchClub and you"
The sketch
club is open to anyone who takes initiative to show up and
participate. There is no Fee to join and no skill requirement.
All ages and all talent are welcome. If you would like to
support our organization in making our community a better
place there are many ways of doing so. You can make a DONATION
or purchase our PRODUCTS. We are non-profit
(501 3 c pending) , so all the procedes go back into
our projects and community programs, and to help support the
organizations that support us. If you would like more information
on any of our projects you can email us at sketchclub@gmail.com
